Michigan Democrat and Former Rep. John Dingell passed Thursday at the age of 92. He served as the longest serving member of Congress on record.

Dingell served in the House of Representatives for 59 years, starting from 1955 to 2015. According to the House historian’s office, he served with 11 presidents and cast 28,551 votes. Aside from his political standing, Dingell was also widely known for his commentary via Twitter.

Dingell was a supporter of the auto industry while still fighting for environmental issues through his position. He helped pass important pieces of legislation including Medicare, The Civil Rights Act, and the Clean Water Act.

His contributions to politics and the well being of the American people will go down in history.
