The HBO documentary series entitled ‘The Defiant Ones’ takes an in-depth look at music moguls Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine which consequently are the most powerful men in music to this day; not to mention influential and nothing less than controversial as well. These two success stories coming from two different ends of the spectrum geographically, shared the same common goal to win, impact, and become music influencers and innovators. The four-part doc series premiered Sunday, July 9th, on HBO and has always caused quite a stir. The documentary demonstrates how both Dre’s and Iovine’s career are intertwined and heavily connected.
Jimmy Iovine, the co-founder of the infamous record label Interscope record which released Dr. Dre’s classic album The Chronic in which a business partnership flourished. With a solid foundation, Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine teamed up and created Beats By Dre electronics in 2006 which was sold to the Apple company for in 2014 for 3 billion dollars, making Dr. Dre just a hair away from becoming “Hip-Hop’s First Billionaire”.
The man behind the lens directing the story is no other than Allen Hughes who is known for his work to some of hip-hop’s best movie such as Menace II Society, Dead Presidents, From Hell, and The Book Of Eli. When Hughes initially pitched for this documentary series focusing on Dr. Dre, but when Hughes got wind that Jimmy Iovine was making a film in regards to Interscope, the director decided to emerge these mogul’s stories together.
Allen Hughes sits down with XXLmag.com to talk about the journey, and the process in making this interesting series, how this documentary pushes the envelope, but most importantly what he has a learned from this two powerhouses.
