Employee discounts are coveted among all people who work in retail.
But for some, like 20-year-old Markell Fossett of Memphis, Tenn., that 15 percent off isn’t enough. WREG reports that the Nike employee stole more than $9,000 worth of sneakers over a four-month period, from February to June 2015.
Markell reportedly told the Nike investigator (yes, those exist) that he would take shoes from the store, shove them down his pants, and then walk them out to his car in the parking lot.
He did this three times a day until he was fired in June. At the end of their investigation, the Nike location lost a total of 205 pairs. After informing the police, Markell was arrested and charged with theft of property worth $1,000-$10,000. And under Tennessee state law, Markell is looking at a possibility of 12 years in jail.
Of course, this isn’t the first time some shadiness has gone down under the not-so-watchful eye of Nike. Last year, former Nike employee Kyle Yamaguchi was involved in a burglary ring that sold 42 stolen limited-edition sneakers to a buyer in Florida for $62,000. At the end of the investigation, it was discovered that over 630 pairs of stolen sneakers were sold and were worth roughly $680,000.
Looks like Nike needs to step up its security game.
