Police in Florida say they have arrested a University of Michigan assistant professor who traveled south with the intent of having sex with a 14-year-old. James Daniel Cavalcoli was arrested Friday in Weston, Florida.

Cavalcoli, 51, is a listed as an assistant professor in U of M’s department of computational medicine and bioinformatics.

Agents from the FBI and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and local Sheriff’s deputies made the arrest. The FBI’s  Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force was involved in the case.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement says Calvacoli made arrangements with one of its undercover agents to meet a child. They say the Michigan professor believed the agent was the father of a 14-year-old.
