Mackinac Island- Today state leaders, business owners, young professionals and media flooded the Grand Hotel for the kick-off of the 2015 Mackinac Policy Conference. The annual conference will focus on talent, urban revelation and cohesion for the state of Michigan. These are the areas the board believes will be stepping stones of the “comeback state” and an emerging “New Detroit”.
This year there is an increase of young faces attending the conference, which excites Detroit Regional Chamber President and CEO Sandy Baruah. Since talent is one of the pillars of the conference it will cover Michigan’s agenda to retain graduating college students in the state. There is no secret that most of Michigan graduates flock to other states with better opportunities of getting a entry position in their career, lower cost of living and higher salaries.
The opposite side of the retaining talent coin will be on increasing the number of non 4-year degree jobs such as plumbers, welders, and farmers. Getting back to the manufacturing jobs that helped build this state. Although qualified certifications is a focus, the state must also consider moving forward in the technology industry.
The Mildred Gaddis Show is broadcasting live from the 2015 Mackinac Policy Conference Wednesdday May 27 and Thursday May 28. Tune from 4p to 7p for the latest coverage.
