The twins were 16-years-old when they tearfully told police they found their mother dead in their home in Conyers, Georgia. Initially, the twins claimed an ex or stranger stabbed their mother, Jarmecca Whitehead, and left her to die in a bathtub. Four months passed before police noticed their stories didn’t add up. The teens were arrested, separated, and interrogated — a process that began a four-year-long spiral of lies.
The twins recently broke down what happened the morning of January 13 at the Appaloosa Way home. Jasmiyah says she and her sister woke up late for school and an argument ensued between them and their mother. After Jarmecca entered her daughters’ room with a pot, the twins felt threatened. That’s when Tasmiyah says she took the pot from her mother, leading to a fight. They both said their mother picked up a knife and tried to stab them – so they had no choice but to defend themselves.
“We all yelling, we all mad. Somehow, someway I don’t know where she got it from, I don’t even remember a knife block but she has a knife,” said Jasmiyah. “So my mom is winning the battle with the knife or whatever, so I pick up the pot and hit her with the pot,” said Tasmiyah.
“She bit me in the chest and like I said, I’m not that that big so when she bit me she latched on to me and I tried to get her off because it hurts so I’m trying to punch her, I guess that then Tas stabs her. She stabbed her,” said Jasmiyah.
The twins say their mother was still alive when they dragged her body into the tub. After watching her die, they told police their mother’s last words.
“[She said] That she hates us, she hates us,”Jasmiyah said. “I guess the same thing we’re going to jail, we’re going to jail.”
Police also uncovered endless domestic disputes between the twins and their mother. However, the now-hardened incarcerated women wish they would have called police before their argument got out of control.
“I’m sorry and I miss her. It’s not how ya’ll are trying to make it seem. I didn’t hate her. And Tas didn’t hate her either. I guess it was just the heat of the moment and the anger between all three of us,” said Jasmiyah.
Prosecutors believe they still don’t have the full story, but are confident the twins will serve their full prison sentence.
