“All Day” didn’t stick as much as Kanye West would’ve hoped. However, he could hang his hat on one thing: He might be the reason Empire is so good.
The series creator Danny Strong talked to KCRW about penning the script. When bored and trying to find energy, Strong looked up to Yeezus for support.
“To procrastinate and for inspiration, I started watching Kanye West interviews,” he said. “After 45 minutes… I said, ‘Alright, I’m good. I know how to do this.”
Yes, West is the espresso in the morning that inspires bipolar freakouts, Oedipus Complex-inspired sex and Taraji P. Henson just killing it as Cookie. The clothes are overpriced, but the Yeezy inspiration is free, guys.
Strong also touched on how a white man like himself is able to write a show like Empire. It doesn’t sound like he had too big of a dilemma: “As far as my own experience in the African-American community, the truth is, when it comes for me and writing, I don’t write anything that I have ever had any experience in. For me, it’s about what interests me, what excites me. Nothing is about my own life experience.”
