Supermodel Beverly Johnson is sharing with the world more details of her claims actor/comedian Bill Cosby drugged her. A day after Johnson’s stunning essay in Vanity Fair where she alleges in 1986 Cosby drugged her after he invited her to his home, the fashion legend talked with Nightline about her encounter. While Johnson, who was the first black model to appear on the cover of American Vogue in 1974, doesn’t believe she was raped, she did feel her life was in danger. Johnson joins the growing list of women who have come forward and accused Cosby of drugging and sexually assaulting them. According to Johnson, Cosby insisted she drink a cup of cappuccino once they started to go over the role she’d play on his hit self-titled sitcom. Johnson claimed:
I took a couple sips of the cappuccino, and from the first sip and then from the second sip, I knew I had been drugged. I mean, I was woozy, my speech was slurred, my … and I kept getting, it kept getting stronger as time went on. It was — I knew that I was in danger.
Johnson recalled Cosby tried to touch her but she went into instant survival mode by cursing him out, which made him angry. The next thing she remembered was Cosby hauling her down the stairs of his brownstone apartment in New York where she was thrown in the back of a taxi and sent home.
What made Johnson speak out now? Johnson admits her decision was a tough choice to make but when she saw the more than a dozen women who also charged Cosby of drugging and assaulting them, she decided to speak up as well. Johnson stated:
Particularly now with Michael Brown and Eric Garner, this attack on black men is real. And now I am calling out a black man, a revered black man, and sometimes it’s really hard to do the right thing, but this is the right thing to do. Sometimes it’s really hard to do the right thing, but I’ve got to do this, I’ve got to do it for my daughter, I’ve got to do it for my granddaughter.
