Homeowner and her father shot and killed by man they were trying to evict
A dispute between a homeowner and her tenant turned deadly on Detroit’s west side Friday night. Police say a 37-year-old woman and her 73-year-old father were shot and killed by a 22-year-old man who was living in a house the woman owned.
Sgt. Michael Woody said officers were dispatched to the home on Piedmont in the Rosedale Park neighborhood around 3 p.m. Friday. The homeowner – who was in the process of evicting the man – sent cops there to convince him to leave. He agreed, and had begun packing up his belongings. But the homeowner called 911 several more times Friday afternoon to complain that he was stealing items from the home.
Officers driving near the neighborhood were flagged down by a man around 7:30 p.m. and told there was a fatal shooting. Police say the homeowner and her father confronted the 22-year-old occupant in the house. They both came armed. An argument ensued inside the house and police say the 22-year-old shot them. A third person, a 26-year-old woman who was with the young man, was also shot. She is expected to survive. Police say it’s unclear who shot her and it’s unclear who shot first.
Sgt. Woody said the 22-year-old man is expected to be arraigned Monday afternoon. Pam Weinstein with the Rosedale Park Improvement Association said the house was recently purchased at a Wayne County auction.
