If you’re a fan of former Michigan running back Fitzgerald Tousssaint. You will be happy to know that after cutting veteran cornerback Derek Cox, the Baltimore Ravens have promoted the rookie running back from their practice squad to their 53-man roster, according to the team website.
I don’t know about you but I couldn’t be happier for Toussaint. After rushing for 2,288 yards and 27 touchdowns in four seasons with the University of Michigan, Toussaint was went un-drafted in the 2014 NFL Draft.
However, after being invited and putting together an impressive camp at the Ravens rookie mini-camp, he was signed as an un-drafted free agent by the Baltimore Ravens.
Although he wasn’t expected by some to do much, during training camp and preseason play, Toussaint did perform well. In his first Ravens preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers, Toussaint rushed for 20 yards on four attempts during game. Even though, he did not play again until the Ravens fourth preseason game against the New Orleans Saints, he made his last preseason game of the year count as he rushed for a game-high 103 yards on 17 carries and caught his only targeted pass for another nine yards.
Nevertheless, despite his successful play in the final game of the preseason and in training camp, Toussaint was released by the Ravens during the final round of cuts before the regular season. However, still impressed with him the Ravens re-signed him to their practice squad.
Now, after patiently waiting, he is now part of the main roster. Even though, Toussaint may be at the bottom of the running back depth chart, it doesn’t change the fact that he will provide some nice depth behind running backs Bernard Pierce, Justin Forset and Lorenzo Taliaferro.
Plus, the Ravens have to feel good knowing if his name is called, Toussaint is more than capable of answering the call. If you ask me, one of the main things that stood-out about Toussaint during preseason play was his ability to extend plays and turn negative plays into positive plays.
Then if that’s Toussaint, is also a very instinctive running back, who patiently waits for lanes to develops and effectively follows blocks everywhere. Not to mention, he does a good job of continuously moving against contact and on being a good north-south runner, who falls forward when tackled, which allows the offense to continuously move the chains in short yardage situations.
Again, none of this is to say that Toussaint will be the starting running back for the Ravens any time soon, it’s simply to say that Toussaint will be ready, if and when his name is called by the Ravens.
