Talib Kweli, whose latest album “Gravitas” is available now on his site KweliClub.com, sat down with Arsenio Hall and the two dug into education, Jay Z, the current state of hip hop, the music industry, and more.
Arsenio pulled out Jay Z’s line from “Moment Of Clarity” where he raps, “If skills sold, truth be told, I’d probably be lyrically Talib Kweli.” Arsenio asked Talib where he was when he first heard the line.
“I was in the studio with Busta Rhymes and he told me about it. I was like man can we trade for a second,” he joked before adding. “Jay Z, where I’m from they call him Hov. A lot of people see an artist like Jay or someone who is a little more gangster rap than me and we’re quick to point out the differences. It’s sexy to point out the differences. But there is so much more to the similarities to what I do and what an artist like Jay Z does. There is so much about being young Black men who grew up in Brooklyn loving hip-hop. Those things create a great camaraderie so it was a huge compliment.”
Talib goes on to talk about the Donald Sterling drama, record sales and more. Watch the full clip below:
Talib also performed his record “State Of Grace,” with RES filling (quite well!) in for Abby Dobson.
