Kildee Also Unveils Website Counter Showing Number of Additional Americans Who Are Losing their Unemployment Insurance Due to Congressional Inaction
WASHINGTON – Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05) today co-sponsored H.R. 3824, the Emergency Unemployment Compensation Extension Act, which would offer a three-month unemployment insurance extension. This bill is identical to the one advancing in the U.S. Senate and would provide vital relief to over one million Americans – including over 43,000 Michiganders – who lost their emergency unemployment benefits starting on Dec. 28, 2013, due to congressional inaction.
“Every week Congress doesn’t act, 72,000 hardworking men and women will join the already 1.4 million Americans who have been abruptly cut off from unemployment insurance,” Congressman Kildee said. “The House should take immediate action on the legislation I’ve cosponsored. It is unconscionable and immoral that Speaker Boehner refuses to schedule a vote and continues to leave over a million American families out in the cold.”
In a letter earlier today, 49 Freshman House Democrats, led by Congressman Kildee, urged Speaker of the House John Boehner (OH-8) to schedule an immediate, up-or-down vote to extend emergency unemployment insurance for over a million Americans who lost their benefits due to congressional inaction at the end of the year.
Congressman Kildee today also debuted a counter on his website tracking the increasing number of Americans who have lost their unemployment benefits due to congressional inaction. Each week without action means approximately an additional 72,000 Americans will also lose their emergency unemployment benefits.
