In 2008, Herman completed a highly selective community organizing fellowship sponsored by the Center for Community Change of the District of Columbia. The Center for Community Change provided Herman with the same instructors that mentored Barack Obama.

While studying at Thomas M. Cooley Law School, Herman served as a student attorney in the Family Law Assistance Project (FLAP), a law school clinic. The clinic offers low-income residents and victims of domestic violence free legal services.
