Shabazz was the son of Qubilah Shabazz, the second daughter of Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz. His father is an Algerian Muslim whom Qubilah Shabazz met in Paris. He is the first male descendant of Malcolm X. In 1997, when he was 12 years old, Shabazz set a fire that caused the death of his grandmother, Betty Shabazz.
Cryptically, his very last tweet was affirming that he was indeed the Grandson of Malcolm X.

Shabazz was interviewed by GIANT magazine upon his release from prison in 2009. In the piece he admitted to having his fair share of problems.
“People often describe me as troubled. I’m not going to say that I’m not. But I’m not crazy,” he told the mag.” I have troubles. A lot of us do. But you need to understand where I’m coming from and why I am the way I am.”
