When are the 2013 Oscars? The 85th Academy Awards take place Sunday, Feb. 24, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Calif. The Oscars air live on ABC, and preshow coverage begins at 4PM PST/7PM EST. This year’s host is comedian Seth MacFarlane, the man behind the hit animated shows “Family Guy” and “American Dad.” Leading the field of 2013 Oscar nominees are “Lincoln,” which is up for 12 awards, and “Life of Pi,” which follows close behind with 11.

The 2013 Oscar nominations were announced on Jan. 10, 2013, and come Feb. 24, nine films will compete for the night’s big prize, Best Picture. And the nominees are … “Amour,” “Argo,” “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” “Django Unchained,” “Les Miserables,” “Life of Pi,” “Lincoln,” “Silver Linings Playbook” and “Zero Dark Thirty.” In the Best Director category, the filmmakers behind five of those selections duke it out for the Oscar statue. When the presenter reads, “And the Oscar goes to…” the sentence will conclude with Michael Haneke (“Amour”), Ang Lee (“Life of Pi”), David O. Russell (“Silver Linings Playbook”), Steven Spielberg (“Lincoln”) or Benh Zeitlin (“Beasts of the Southern Wild”).

The 2013 Oscars are notable for several reasons. For the first time ever, all five Best Supporting Actor nominees—Alan Arkin, Robert De Niro, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Tommy Lee Jones and Christoph Waltz—have won the award before. In the Best Original Song category, meanwhile, none of the contenders—not even British singer Adele, who’s slated to perform her James Bond theme “Skyfall”—has won an Academy Award. While “Silver Linings Playbook” didn’t snag the most nods, it does earn the distinction of being the first film since 2004’s ”Million Dollar Baby to earn nominations in the “Big Five” categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay (adapted or original, depending).
