Former Bad Boy Records protege Ma$e is treading new waters after putting out a fresh freestyle called “What You Do” showing a distinct change from his New York rapping style.

Rather than take it back to his Harlem World days, Mason Betha uses Atlanta rapper Gucci Mane’s “Wasted” instrumental to drop a Southern-sounding track.

Former Bad Boy-signed rapper Ma$e is no stranger to comebacks. After reemerging to the rap scene in recent weeks through a contribution to Wale’s “Slight Work” remix and reports of collaborations with French Montana and Rick Ross, Pastor Mason Betha drops this freestyle on Gucci Mane’s “Wasted” instrumental titled “What You Do”, a track for DJ Smallz’s Southern Smoke: Civil War 3 mixtape. Obviously his new material is a far cry from the Harlem World days, but that too-cool-for-school flow is hiding in there somewhere. (Soul Culture UK)

On the freestyle, Ma$e lives up to the dollar sign in his name with endless money-related flaunting.

“Where you find this n*gga, if you get this in the middle please rewind this my n*gga,” he raps, “You gonna play with me, okay, you want me violent/You just started getting head, these chicks is tossing salad/Oh you the president, who playing with them dollars.” (“What You Do”)

Not only spitting over Southern beats, Ma$e recently dished out some career advice to Atlanta’s 2 Chainz.

“A legend hit me the other day,” Chainz said in an interview with radio host Big Boy. “This my first time putting it in an interview. But Ma$e hit me the other day and told me he was a fan of my music, dog. And then he told me something that Biggie said and I felt like Biggie told it to me. … Biggie told Ma$e at the time they was popping, whatever, he said, ‘Get it while you can and can it when you get it.’ And I was like, it felt like Biggie had told me. That phone call just meant so much. Stuff like that lets me know I’m covering ground.” (Power 106)

In April, the New York-bred emcee promised another long run in hip-hop.

“Flex, let me tell you something before I go, though,” Ma$e said, “I can only do music if I can do it the way I can do it. That’s what be making me stop. I don’t want to do music in a box. Like everybody say what I can’t do and he can’t say this, but if you need me to come do something for you, I’ve gotta be able to come to that event. So I’m taking all the limitations off. They gonna have to pray for me. I regret not giving myself room for growth. That’s what I regret. I went so hard left that I didn’t really leave no room to be an individual, a human being. … I still put God over music any day. I just didn’t give myself room to grow. I went from one extreme to another extreme.” (Hot 97)
