DETROIT — Police say they are searching for two men who attacked a woman after she hired them to rake her leaves.

Police told Local 4 the attack happened on the 18000 block of Joseph Campau Street near Nevada Avenue north of the Hamtramck border on Detroit’s east side.

Neighbors said that an 85-year-old woman named Mary has lived in the home for years and that she is well-liked by neighbors.

Mary told police that two men asked her if they could rake her lawn for cash. Mary agreed and the men raked her entire front yard, neatly bagged the leaves and put them on the curb, police said.

Police said when the men got inside the home; they robbed Mary and pushed her down her basement stairs.

A neighbor who didn’t want to be identified said he thought it was suspicious when the two men went inside her house and moments later ran out of the house and jumped a fence.

The neighbor said Mary came out with her face bleeding looking for help.

“Her face was covered with blood so I ran across the street,” the neighbor said.

The neighbor took Mary inside the house and a driver passing by called 911, the neighbor said.

“She’s been living there all her life. She worked for AAA, her husband worked at the plant down the street. She’s been here forever. You don’t work and live your life to get that old and have some knucklehead knock you down your steps to $20 out of your purse,” the neighbor said.

Mary has been known to pay people in the neighborhood to do work in her house and yard, neighbors said.

Mary was taken to a nearby hospital.

Neighbors said the suspects did not look familiar to the neighborhood. Police said the two suspects are still on the loose.
