In anticipation of this year’s 2011 BET Hip-Hop Awards show cypher, SOHH spoke with DJ Holiday, the official DJ of this year’s ceremony.

While Holiday remained tight-lipped over the list of rappers slated to spit fire on camera this year, he promised that it would be a show sure to entertain.

We rockin’ that thing out again this year, I did it last year … it’s always a pleasure working with BET. So I signed my life away for a couple days [laughs]. The cyphers are definitely gonna be entertaining this year. It’s gonna be a big event. It can’t give it away, I signed a contract, man. But I’m lettin’ you know: Last year was cool, but this year they went all out. They got some heavyweights.(SOHH)

Atlanta rapper 2 Chainz (formerly known as Tity Boi) however, was a little more forthcoming with sharing his knowledge on a few of the event’s performers.

I’m in the cypher — I did it this year. Yeah, B. It’s top-secret, but I’m excited. I can tell you that my cypher was with Ludacris, Busta Rhymes and Reek da Villian. It was entertainment, know what I mean? Bars.(SOHH)

Names also confirmed for this year’s cypher include B.o.B., Machine Gun Kelly, Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, French Montana and even Tech N9ne, who recently shared his thoughts on what defines a true cypher.

My definition of a cypher is people … I don’t wanna say fellas because it could be women, it could be kids, it could be everything. It could be aliens. Rhymin’. Know what I’m sizzlin’? Exchanging flows and exchangin’ rhymes back and forth — that’s my definition of a cypher. (The Real Tech N9ne)

Last year, Young Money rapstress Nicki Minaj revealed that although she had become an award-winning artist, her love of the cypher was once the highlight of the award show experience.

“Last year, I was here in anticipation of the cypher,” she told the crowd, referring to the artist rap freestyles that run in between the award presentations and performances. “Now I’m here in anticipation of my debut. [Pink Friday, set for release November 23.] “I’m paving the way for girls,” she continued. “I wanna thank all the girls of hip-hop.” Jay-Z was also able to bag three awards with the Perfect Combo “Empire State of Mind” (with Alicia Keys), CD of the Year (The Blueprint 3) and Best Live Performer.
