Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb unveiled his plan to close 44 Detroit schools.

Robert Bobb says the move is due to the shrinking student population. Forty-four schools will close in June. Six additional schools will shut down in June of 2011 and seven more the year after that.

Over the next four to five years, Bobb projects the Detroit School District will see an enrollment drop of 30,000 students.

Some of the city’s oldest schools are on the closure list.

It’s all part of $1 billion academic plan to revamp the school district by consolidating schools and renovating buildings that will remain open.

“This program is neighborhood-focused to support all of Detroit neighborhoods with quality schools,” the Associated Press quotes Bobb as saying. “Most importantly, it’s taking into consideration where the city is going.”

Bobb also says with fewer schools the numbers of principals, assistant principals and custodians would also decrease.

Wednesday’s announcement comes on the heels of a meeting where Bobb introduced his detailed academic plan for Detroit Public Schools.

In the overall academic plan, Bobb calls for 100 percent passing rate for the Michigan Educational Assessment Program, a 98 percent graduation rate, average daily attendance for students, more teachers achieving National Board Certification, higher ACT scores and more graduates going on to college.
