With the Valentine’s Day weekend upon us many folks will be looking for a flick to cuddle up with. But what are the choices? The sad fact is that seeing two Black people in love (or even lust) on the big screen is becoming more and more rare. Remember when it felt like we had another movie filled with beautiful brown skinned people coming out several times a year? A lot of you fifteen-year-olds owe your existence to a date night where Love Jones was shown. Trust.

Crimnal Minds star Shemar Moore threw a Super Bowl party and things got pretty wild. The more pressing matter at the shindig was the fact he was photographed kissing multiple white women and didn’t take one photo with a black woman.

Shemar Moore has come under fire for dating white women on more than one occasion. The weird thing about Moore is that though is is mixed, he considers himself a black man yet the only time he has some sort of interaction with black women is when he is paid to in a movie. Moore has come out and said he appreciates black women, but actions haven’t supported his statements.

Once upon a time, the head of rapper Marcus Manchild‘s label, AMG, told him that he “rapped weird.” About three years later the 22-year-old from Houston was prepared to face a notoriously fickle crowd at New York’s S.O.B’s night club. Any butterflies in his stomach were probably pickled in vodka, but the nerves persisted. This is no country for weird rappers.

“I’ve performed before with a different type of crowd at the Best Buy Theater during Smokers Club but with this type of crowd….They’ll boo you. Quick,” he says recalling the show the next day. “And that’s what they kept telling me. If you didn’t get booed then it was a success.”

Well, Marcus didn’t get booed. In fact, the show went really well. Bringing out hometown hero Paul Wall didn’t hurt, but Marcus held his own. As it turns out, weird is the new black. Or purple.

“In my eyes, it was amazing. Just to come up to New York and see a packed out house and never performed in front of that type of crowd. So I go out and they start rockin’ out with me, even if they weren’t super rockin’ I could tell I had their attention.”

The former High School point guard is aware that he’s in a whole new game now, but he’s ready to play. His remix of ASAP Rocky’s “Purple Swag” is a defiant reclamation of his hometown’s hip-hop legacy. Being influenced by his city is fine, but he’s got a firm grip on the Houston torch and isn’t letting it go to just anybody. Check the video to “We Wrong” featuring Slim Thug for proof.

“There a lot of legends out from Houston…you got Scarface, Bun B, Slim Thug and all them and they made a name for themselves and made an image for Houston that you can’t let down,” he says. “Can’t let the people down.”

Actor/comedian Mike Epps is never one to shy away from controversy. He stopped in Houston on a comedy tour and had some choice words about our favorite reality television mom. Epps went in on Jim Jones’ mother by saying she looked like Freddy Kreuger and imitating Mama Jones’ gravelly voice. Then put Chrissy Lampkin in his crosshairs by cracking that Mama Jones would kick Chrissy’s a$$.

The jokes were funny, but how funny will Jim Jones find Mike Epps’ sentiments. We all know how sensitive Chrissy and Mama Jones are, so something tells me this isn’t going to end well. Where are Mona Scott-Young’s cameras when you need them?!

One American “idol” may have just made history at Carnegie Hall, but plenty more are about to celebrate history at the world famous venue. Just days after Jay-Z performed on back-to-back nights for charity, “American Idol” Music Director Ray Chew will be holding “A Tribute To The Music of Motown” tonight, February 9th, 2012 at the concert hall.

The event is being sponsored by United Airlines and hosted by CNN journalist, Soledad O’Brien with a guest list that includes the legendary Dionne Warwick, Paul Shaffer, Boys II Men, BeBe Winans and Motown’s own, Martha Reeves.

“This is a tribute to the great iconic music of Motown felt and known the world over, crossed cultural lines and spans generations,” Mr. Chew told TheUrbandaily.com. “It’s very befitting that we bring this music that is part of the American fabric to an iconic venue like Carnegie Hall.”

Chew explained that after holding a tribute to Motown on “American Idol” the reality set in that many of the legends of Black music are passing away. And after speaking with Motown founder Berry Gordy that night, Chew felt it was time to “give them their roses while they can smell them” so to speak, and what better time than Black History Month?

“A lot of the young artists that I encounter, Motown is in your blood stream whether you realize it or not,” said Chew. “When you rattle of the names of the artists and the songs everyone realizes how much this is part of the experience. Stevie Wonder alone…everyone has performed a Stevie Wonder song at some point. Artists are standing on the shoulders of these giants.”

The night will also include tributes to the late Nick Ashford, who Chew says was, “very close to me” and the recently departed Don Cornelius.

“His contribution to not only Black music and R&B and the support he gave the Motown artists can not be overstated,” Chew said of the Soul Train founder. “So he will be part of our tribute.”
