Charlie Strong

Well it seems the Texas Longhorn search for a new head coach has come to an end. According to multiple reports, Charlie Strong, the head coach at Louisville, has been offered the head coaching job at Texas and he has accepted the job.

The program confirmed the hire of Charlie Strong in a press release on its website:

Then later, Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated provided the details on Strong’s contract:

Now this hire is no surprise to me. I mentioned in my previous article, that Strong could be a possible replacement for Mack Brown at Texas. He may not fit the usual mode of what most Texas fans are looking for in a coach but he’s still a solid hire. He turned Louisville into one the nation’s top teams at one point this season. He finished with 37-15 record during his four seasons at Louisville and led the Cardinals to back-to-back bowl wins, including an upset victory over Florida in the 2013 Sugar Bowl. He help to build up one of the top quarterbacks in college football right now in Teddy Bridgewater. He knows how to recruit and develop great talent, plus he has ties to the south part of Florida when it comes to recruiting which is always a nice plus.

The only concern I have with Strong, is his ability to handle politics and the pressure that comes with the Texas job. By now, everyone knows that Texas has a rich history of production and success and they want their coach to be able to keep that production and success going. I feel Strong is a good coach but it’s not about just being a good coach. Accepting a job with Texas means dealing with the media, boosters and etc. Now I know he dealt with some of that while at Louisville but it’s a totally different ball game with Texas.

However, that’s not to say that this is a bad hire, because I say again, I think this is a good hire. I’m simply saying that is an area to watch during his time with Texas. Besides that, I still think this is a good hire. Strong runs a tough team and will bring that hard-nose style of play that has been missing at Texas for a while, which is what Texas wants and needs. He also does a good job of developing his talent which is another thing Texas wants and needs. More importantly, he will bring a strong defense to Texas just like he did with Florida when he was their defensive coordinator. Don’t forget that Florida won two BCS titles during his time in Gainesville. According to ESPN Stats and Info, while at Louisville, the Cardinals were in the top 10 in the FBS in points per game, yards per game, yards per play and sack percentage. So there is no doubt that Texas should see immediate improvement defenselessly.

Overall, he’s a good man and coach which is a step in the right direction for Texas. He may not be Nick Saban, but let’s be real, not many people are. I understand that some fans have their reservations about this hire but overall its solid hire. Could Texas have gone with someone else? Yes, but they didn’t and I think they have made a solid decision in hiring Strong but only time will tell.
