For her Fall 2013 Zero + Maria Cornejo collection, Chilean designer Maria Cornejo wanted to slow down and simplify. Known for her sophisticated cuts and streamlined silhouettes, Cornejo excels in creating clothes for a woman who wants to look polished, not stuffy.
As a result, her designs fit seamlessly into the wardrobes of cool, metropolitan women. And they will surely be pleased with Cornejo’s offering for Fall. First off, this collection highlighted her knack for leather. Leather pants came skinny or slouched, shorts were loose with a tailored fit, and skirts skimmed hips comfortably. Another win for Cornejo: prints. Hers were bold and incredibly flattering.
Colors most prominent in the collection were soft grey (a very popular hue for Fall), deep maroon and a gorgeous shimmery black that was plentifully used in evening wear. Standouts were easy to spot early on in the lineup. The first look, a navy coat paired with a black leather top and printed pants, was equal parts casual and chic. A fiery all-maroon look incorporated various textures and was styled to perfection. My newest favorite color, a wonderful mix of powder blue, purple and a touch of grey, was right on target in a leather shirt and pant set. Cornejo’s coats were a hit and varied from saturated solids to abstract prints. I can see Solange rocking this collection for Fall and mixing the prints for a look that’s all her own.
